Theme: Getting a Closer Look At Birds
Author: kathy
Once we have a variety of bird feeders in our yards, we expect to see a variety of birds. Some birds will regularly gather at tube feeders, while others prefer the low platform feeders and still others are drawn to the hopper feeders. As we learn to identify these varieties, of course we want to approach for a closer look. As the resident birds become more familiar with the habits of the person who regularly fills the bird feeders, it becomes easier to get closer to feeding birds. Always remember that abrupt movements will frighten birds and they will immediately take flight. It is necessary to move slowly and quietly. If a bird you are trying to get close to appears ready to flee, stop all movement and wait until it appears to relax. Slowly approaching at an angle will get you pretty close to many birds. Others will take off when you even attempt to approach. Over time, you will figure out which species allow you to come in close and which just never stay around as you approach bird feeders.
