atfly.jpgBird migration happens twice a year. In the spring, between April and May, birds move to the north, to higher altitudes and to the interior of the land. Birds migrate in order to find plentiful food supplies and good breeding grounds. Most species breed during the summer when the weather is warm, days are long and there is plenty of food available. Therefore this is our perfect opportunity to draw birds to our feeders. Hanging platform bird feeders will attract smaller birds like finches and sparrows. If the platform bird feeders are filled with wild bird seed as well as black oil sunflower seeds, you can attract all varieties of traveling birds. Add platform feeders to the ground feeding area and the ground feeders will be happy as well. In the fall, the platform bird feeders will attract migrating birds from Sept. to mid-Nov. when they return south, to lower altitudes, or to the coasts.

pro4.jpgSpring is an important time to feed birds and is also a great time to see birds that don’t normally live your area. This is the time of migration when birds require a great deal of energy for their travels and natural food sources are just beginning to appear after the winter. Hopper feeders are particularly useful as they hold more seed than most tube feeders and also allow more birds to feed at the same time. Your seed offerings are a welcome supplement to the insects, worms and plant sprouts normally available. This is a good time to stop putting out suet feeders for the warmer weather can turn suet rancid or melt suet cakes. By April, nesting season is usually beginning so adding nesting materials to your offerings will entice birds to nest nearby and continue to visit your yard all summer.
